Front and Side Fences

Constructing front and side fences involves careful planning around local regulations and selecting appropriate materials based on desired aesthetics, privacy, and budget.

Construction Process (DIY Overview)

While professional installation is often recommended to ensure proper post depth and compliance with local codes, the basic DIY steps involve:

  1. Plan and Measure: Accurately measure the perimeter and plan the gate locations. Ensure compliance with all local regulations.
  2. Layout Posts: Mark the exact locations for all posts, typically spaced 6-8 feet apart.
  3. Dig Holes: Dig post holes to the required depth (local codes often specify depths of 2-3 feet or more, depending on fence height and soil conditions).
  4. Set Posts: Position posts and set them in concrete for maximum strength and stability. Ensure they are plumb and correctly aligned before the concrete cures.
  5. Attach Rails/Panels: Once the concrete is set, attach horizontal rails between the posts. For fences over 4 feet high, use three rails for stability.
  6. Attach Boards/Pickets: Fasten the fence boards or pre-built panels to the rails.
  7. Finishing Touches: Add post caps and apply a stain or paint (if using wood) to protect the material and enhance its appearance.
